डा सुमन सहाय
मोहल्ला हिन्दू पट्टी निवासी करनल कृष्णमुरारी सहाय और स्वर्णलता सहाय की पुत्री सुमन बचपन से ही विलक्षण प्रतिभा की धनी थी। उन्होंने नैनीताल से शिक्षा प्राप्त कर भारतीय कृषि अनुसंधान संस्थान से आनुवांशिकी में डाक्टरेट की। उन्होंने अलवर्टा विश्वविद्यालय, शिकागो विवि तथा जर्मनी के हैडलवर्ग विवि में शोध किया। उन्होंने किसानों और आदिवासियों को उनके अधिकार दिलाने के लिए जीन कैम्पेन की स्थापना की। संस्था इस समय उत्तर प्रदेश सहित देश के 17 राज्यों में कार्य कर रही है। डा सहाय इसी कारण कई राष्ट्रीय नीति निर्धारण मंचों की सदस्य भी हैं। उन्होंने 11 वीं पंचवर्षीय योजना में योजना आयोग द्वारा गठित टास्क फोर्स की भी अध्यक्षता की। इसके साथ ही शिक्षा के केन्द्रीय सलाहकार बोर्ड, वन संरक्षण समिति, मेघालय योजना बोर्ड, भारतीय चिकित्सा अनुसंधान परिसर, झारखण्ड कृषि आयोग तथा मध्य प्रदेश जैव विविधता बोर्ड की भी सदस्य हैं। 2001 में जीन कैम्पेन की स्थापना तथा उसके उत्कृष्ट कार्यो के कारण उन्हें नीदरलैण्ड के प्रतिष्ठित पुरस्कार नाइट ऑफ द गोल्डन आर्क से भी सम्मानित किया गया। कृषि तथा पर्यावरण में उत्कृष्ट योगदान के लिये 2004 में राष्ट्रपति एपीजे अब्दुल कलाम ने कृषि क्षेत्र के सर्वोच्च सम्मान बारलॉग से सम्मानित किया। 2008 में उन्हें महिला पुरस्कार प्रदान किया गया। इसके बाद अब उत्कृष्ट कार्यो के लिये राष्ट्रपति प्रतिभा पाटिल ने एक अप्रैल को दिल्ली में पद्मश्री पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया है
• Dr Suman Sahai – Founder Of The Gene Campaign in India
She is the founder of the Gene Campaign in India. She is the voice of the millions of farmers all across the country. Her campaign is currently running in 17 states across the country.
Dr Sahai is the brains and the brawn behind the patent campaign for Azadirachta indica (Neem) and Turmeric (Haldi). She believes that ‘nature’s technology can meet the needs of humanity’.
Dr. Suman Sahai, who has had a distinguished scientific career in the field of genetics, was honored with the 2004 Borlaug Award for her outstanding contribution to agriculture and the environment. Dr. Sahai has served as a faculty member at the Universities of Alberta and Chicago as also the University of Heidelberg. She returned to India and organized Gene Campaign, an organization dedicated to protecting farmers’ rights and food and livelihood security. Dr Sahai chaired the Planning Commission Task Force on ‘ Agro biodiversity and Genetically Engineered Organisms’ , for the Eleventh Plan. She has received s everal national awards and was appointed Knight of the Golden Ark (Netherlands) in 2001.
Her name figures in the list of successful women pioneers in India because of her single-minded dedication to her cause, which made the Indian government sit up and take notice of the actual problems faced by Indian farmers.
